Province-Wide Ban on Artificial Tanning for Minors Now in Effect

Alberta businesses are no longer allowed to advertise or provide UV tanning services to people under 18-years old.

As of January 1, 2018, businesses in Alberta can no longer advertise or provide artificial tanning services to minors. The province notes in a media release that the use of UV tanning before the age 35 increases the risk of skin cancer by nearly 60 per cent, which currently accounts for more than one-third of all new cancer cases in Alberta. Businesses that offer tanning services will be required by law to post health warnings and age restrictions, and unsupervised artificial tanning equipment will no longer be allowed in public places. The new legislation will be enforced by Alberta Health Services. -Sam Borsato
