Lethbridge Safe Consumption Site will be First in North America to Provide Supervised Inhalation

Lethbridge's safe consumption site will allow inhalation services - the first to do so in North America.

Lethbridge's safe consumption site is set to become the first in North America for supervised inhalation services. The facility, a former nightclub on 1st avenue south, is so far the only one to be granted approval by Health Canada to allow drugs to be injected, taken orally, snorted and inhaled. Managing Director of ARCHES, Jill Manning, says  it may be a fairly new concept in North America but supervised inhalation sites have been operating in Europe for 30 years. That's why five members of the Executive Leaders Coalition took a trip to Europe last spring to see first-hand how inhalation services were managed. Manning says a lot has changed since North America's first legal drug injection site opened in downtown Vancouver in 2003. She says since the fentanyl crisis has hit, all modes of administration run a really high risk as many drugs are being laced, cut and buffed with fentanyl. Because of this, officials are seeing overdoses from all modes of consumption, not just injection. Lethbridge's supervised consumption site is expected to open early in the new year. -Tina Giesbrecht
