Federal Funding Means Twin Arena and Curling Rink for West Lethbridge

It's the funding announcement the City of Lethbridge has been waiting for.
A major investment by the Federal Government means west Lethbridge will get a new curling rink and a twin ice arena. Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer announced a $10 million dollar grant Thursday to go toward the new west side leisure centre. The city's Recreation and Culture Manager, Ashley Matthews, says it took about a year to secure the funding, which is the reason for the project's delay. But, he says it was worth it, since the added funding means a new ten-sheet curling facility can now be included in the project. The west side curling rink will replace the 68 year old facility in downtown Lethbridge. The total cost of the project is close to $40 million. A final report to Lethbridge City Council on Phase 1 of the west side leisure centre is expected to happen sometime in May. Completion of the project is scheduled for June 2015.
