City Council has approved a total of $250,000 as part of Major Event Grant Funding to help the Pronghorns take a shot at hosting the U Sports Men's National Hockey Championships in back-to-back years.
Lethbridge City Council has voted to give the University of Lethbridge a $250,000 grant to bid on hosting the U Sports Men's National Hockey Championships. U Sports was formerly known as CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport). The bid would be for hosting at the ENMAX Centre in back-to-back years, 2019 and 2020. U of L Sport and Rec Director, Ken McInnis says this would be a great recruiting tool for men's hockey if the University is successful. He says the University is limited by what scholarships it can provide and also limited on what can be done under U Sports regulations. McInnis notes when you can tell a player you can come play men's hockey in a great city, go to a great school, and also host the national championships in back-to-back years, that's a powerful recruitment message. The Pronghorns hope to hear back on their bid before Christmas. - Pat Siedlecki
