Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes is asking for the immediate relocation of money that has been earmarked for the establishment of the Medicine Hat supervised consumption site.

A southern Alberta MLA has written to the new Health Minister asking him to reconsider placing a supervised consumption site in his community.

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes says drug usage is an epidemic that has been growing but insists a supervised consumption site is not the answer.

In his letter to Minister Tyler Shandro, Barnes asks for the immediate relocation of money that has been earmarked for the establishment of the Medicine Hat facility. He says he's heard from many constituents and stakeholders who would prefer a more effective use of tax payer dollars like alternate types of counselling and enhanced detox services.

Barnes also says the development of the site needs to be suspended until the issue has been discussed further.
