An AUPE protest outside a west side nursing home Friday afternoon.
Seniors and staff at a west-side nursing home are protesting plans to contract out food and housekeeping services. The AgeCare Columbia facility sent letters to employees in June, stating they'll be laying off kitchen, dietary, and housekeeping staff and bringing in a private contractor. Vice President of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, Glen Scott, says he's concerned the quality of food and service will decline with the new contractor, citing it's poor track record for providing a variety of nutritious food. Scott adds the jobs lost will be replaced by lower-paying positions, likely with no benefits.
