Given the large amount of people using Lethbridge's Supervised Drug Consumption site, operators say the facility will soon be open around the clock.
Lethbridge's supervised drug consumption site is going to soon be a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation. ARCHES Executive Director, Stacey Bourque tells our radio station the site along 1st Avenue South has been heavily-used since opening in late February. She says as of next Tuesday (May 22), the site will be open around the clock.
Since the site opened its doors, the hours of operation have been 9:00 am to 2:00 am, however Bourque says that will be changing soon given how much the facility is being used. She says they've been working hard to reduce wait times, which can reach between 60 and 90 minutes and ensure there is round-the-clock service to relieve some of the pressure the community is feeling around public drug consumption.
Bourque says to put things into perspective, the Calgary supervised consumption site has seen 10,200 visits in five months, while in Lethbridge the site here has seen more than that (10,500 visits) in just 9 weeks.
She also notes by the end of this week, they should have another four injection booths ready to go. ARCHES had applied to Alberta Health Services in recent days for the extra space. - Pat Siedlecki
