Tuesday (November 6) marked the end of Lethbridge County’s Calcium Base, Stabilization project, in which 138 miles of haul roads were completed. This project was considered ambitious due to the number of miles and the relatively short season in which the process of base stabilization can be done.
Staff from Lethbridge County and Goldridge Sand and Gravel celebrated as the Base Stabilization crew completed the final mile on Range Road 19-5.
The project’s business plan required the majority of the work (121 miles of the haul roads) to be completed over a two-year period in 2017 and 2018. The extremely dry weather in 2017, followed by flooding this spring and repeated dry conditions this summer and fall created challenges. At the end of
2017 the program was 20 miles short of the goal for the year, however the challenge of completing the remaining 80 miles in 2018 was met and overcome by the County’s skilled workforce.

The completion of this project will allow for increased safety on roads, decreased gravel loss, reduced road ban seasons for the haul routes, and a haul route network that ensures producers in Lethbridge County can get their products to market.
Calcium Base Stabilization was identified in 2015 as the most appropriate and economical solution to repairing and rebuilding the County’s deteriorating roads within the haul route network. Changes in transportation and agriculture have greatly increased the demand on the County’s gravel road network,
requiring heavy-use roads to be repaired frequently. The Calcium Base Stabilization process provides a smooth surface with minimal dust and gravel loss. It also increases the load bearing capacity of the roadways which are then less susceptible to failures, minimizing annual maintenance costs. -Country Release
