Lethbridge is hoping to secure another major curling event. The Curling Club, along with the ENMAX Centre, will be putting in a bid to host the 2019 World Men's Curling Championship.

Lethbridge is bidding to host the 2019 World Men's Curling Championship. City Council Monday (Nov. 27) approved a $500,000 Major Event Grant to the Lethbridge Curling Club and ENMAX Centre. If the bid is successful, that money and/or in-kind support would be used to help operate the event. ENMAX Centre General Manager Kim Gallucci says the World Men's is a Tier One sporting event that would really put Lethbridge on the map. He says it's watched by people all over the world. Gallucci notes when Lethbridge hosted the World Women's Curling event a few years ago it attracted spectators from places like New York City and Japan and he anticipates with the huge popularity of men's curling, those spectator visitor numbers would be even higher. The bid must be into Curling Canada by December 1st, with the successful host city to be announced by the end of December. City Councillors unanimously approved the grant request. Councillor Rob Miyashiro says to him it's a no-brainer. He says curling now has almost become a year-round sport and hosting an event like this will put Lethbridge on the world curling stage for a long time leading up to the championship. - Pat Siedlecki
