Traffic along a portion of 5th Avenue North will be disrupted until late September as the City of Lethbridge works to relocate a gas line and upgrade two old watermains.
Some traffic disruptions on a heavily-used north side road for the next few months. Starting Thursday (May 17) work will start to relocate a gas main and upgrade two watermains on 5th Avenue North, between 16th and 23rd Streets.
Motorists are advised to watch for road closures along 5 Avenue North during the following dates:
* May 17 – September 5 (16 Street North to 19 Street North)
* July 2 – August 31 (19 Street to 23 Street North)
Motorists are asked to drive with caution in this area and to follow posted detours.
Like all infrastructure, gas, water, sewer and storm lines eventually need to be replaced. The City of Lethbridge has partnered with ATCO Gas to schedule this work at the same time to minimize disruption to residents.
Numerous breaks have occurred on the two watermains along 5th Avenue North. These watermains, installed in 1939 and 1954, have reached the end of their lifecycle, resulting in unreliable service to surrounding residents. The two watermains will be replaced by a single watermain to meet current standards and improve service.
ATCO Gas will be relocating the gas main before the watermain is replaced between 16 Street North and 19 Street North.
This work is expected to wrap up by Sunday, September 30, weather permitting.
