It's a first for the Town of Cardston. A Pride Fest event is taking place this coming weekend with a flag raising ceremony and other entertainment in Lions Park.

A big weekend for Cardston, as the town will see its first-ever Pride Fest event.

It's set to take place this Saturday, June 9th from Noon to 3:00 pm at Lions Park. The Pride Flag will raised at a special ceremony that afternoon on a temporary flag pole provided by the Town of Cardston.

Liz Roberts is one of the organizers of Cardston Pride. She says the town has come a long, long way in making greater efforts to become more diverse, tolerant, and inclusive.

Roberts grew up in Cardston and says this weekend Pride event is a big step. She says the small-town mindset and separation from the ‘outside world’ made her feel like she was "the only queer person in the world and like there was something wrong with her." Roberts says she's since learned that many LGBTQ2S+ folks have lived in Cardston, but they were struggling with the same social pressures that she was as they didn’t feel safe living ‘out’ enough for a questioning kid like her to notice.

The celebration on Saturday aims to start a conversation about how the community can create safe spaces and facilitate access to services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit and other rainbow-identifying people. - Pat Siedlecki
