Dr. Hughes, Emeritus Professor of Food Marketing at Imperial College London, was the keynote speaker for The Food for Thought breakfast Tuesday.

The man known as "Doctor Food" was in Lethbridge this week.

David Hughes, former Professor of Marketing at Imperial College in London, was the keynote speaker for the Food for Thought Breakfast.

Trevor Lewington with Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) says Dr. Hughes spoke about the future of food and how southern Alberta is in a very good position to capitalize. Leveraging his global expertise in value-added processing and food marketing, Dr. Hughes spoke to how southern Alberta can take advantage of international trends and leverage its collective strength in the agri-food sector.

Lewington says agriculture is a $110 billion per year industry in Canada and represents more than seven per cent of the national GDP, while in Lethbridge it is more than 15% of our GDP. Canada ranks eighth in terms of exports, which Lewington says leaves a huge opportunity for our region to fill.
