Deadly Carfentanil Found in Batch of Seized Drugs From Lethbridge Bust

An extremely potent and deadly drug has been identified following a local drug bust back in late July.

Lethbridge Police say tests have confirmed deadly carfentanil was among a batch of drugs seized in the city this summer. At the end of July, officers spotted a woman with outstanding warrants engaging in drug activity. Police seized cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl pills, a bag containing unknown powder and more than $2,000 cash. The unknown powder was sent to the Health Canada lab for analysis and results confirmed the presence of carfentanil. Carfentanil is a veternary drug used to tranquilize elephants and other large animals. It's 100 times more powerful than fentanyl and 1,000 times more potent than heroin. For humans, a 20 microgram dose, less than a grain of salt, is enough to be fatal. -Tina Giesbrecht
