Albertans Under the Age of 18 to be Banned from Using Ultraviolet Artificial Tanning Beds

The Alberta government is banning anyone under 18 from using artificial tanning beds.

The Alberta government is banning anyone under 18 from using artificial tanning beds. As of January 1st, tanning salons will not be able to provide ultraviolet artificial tanning services to minors.  The government says it's acting on clear evidence linking artificial tanning with skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Alberta and accounts for more than one-third of all new cancer cases. UV radiation exposure accounts for about 82% of melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. As part of the legislation, businesses must also prominently display health warnings related to ultraviolet artificial tanning. -Tina Giesbrecht
