Alberta Banning Seclusion Rooms in Schools

Alberta Education

The order permits school boards to apply to the minister for exemptions, but only if they can demonstrate support from parents.

The 2019-2020 school year will mean the end of seclusion rooms in schools across Alberta.

Education Minister David Eggen announcing last week the ban will take effect September 1st.

The purpose of seclusion rooms is to involuntarily confine students, preventing them from leaving without the assistance of another person.

Local school boards are now required to submit a list of schools with seclusion well as a declaration that those rooms will be decommissioned by August 30th this year.

Alberta Education says it will conduct on-site inspections to ensure compliance.
