Interact Club of Lethbridge Global Gala
Saturday, June 15th
On Saturday June 15, 2019, the Interact Club of Lethbridge will host our fourth annual fundraiser,
Interact Club of Lethbridge Global Gala at the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association in support of
construction at the APU Malawi Girl’s School in Malawi, and in support of the Lethbridge YMCA Strong
Kids Program. The Interact Club of Lethbridge is the high school version of Rotary, and is sponsored by
the Rotary Club of Lethbridge.
In Africa millions of girls do not have the opportunity to get an education. Most parents cannot afford to
educate their daughters, so they are forced to stay home, or are married off by the age of 15 or 16. The
APU Malawi Girls School is a residential secondary school founded by Canadian teacher Christie Johnson
and Malawian teacher Memory Mdyetseni to provide a quality education for many Malawian girls who
would otherwise not be able to get an education, to have a brighter future, and a better tomorrow. It is
a safe place, where they can live, grow and learn in a positive environment. The APU Malawi Girls School
empowers these young women through education they would otherwise not receive. “If you educate a
woman, you educate a family, if you educate a girl, you educate the future."
The Lethbridge YMCA Strong Kids Program provides underprivileged kids the opportunities they need to
live healthier, happier lives, today and in the future. One in five children in the Lethbridge area is
currently living in a household that is below the poverty line. However, these children still deserve
access to safe, supportive programs and services where they can grow.
The Lethbridge YMCA Strong Kids Program directly supports low income, underprivileged children, teens
and families in our community so they can participate in recreational, health and wellness, social and
leadership programming. The Strong Kids Program sends low income children to attend day camps,
overnight camps, in need youth to attend leadership development programs to build their skills,
character and self-esteem, provides these children and youth the chance to learn to swim, and the
opportunity to participate in a recreation or physical activity.
Last year our Global Gala raised over $19,000 for the Lethbridge & District YWCA Harbour House
Women’s Emergency Shelter and the House of Hope in Tanzania. This year we are hoping to raise
$20,000 in support of the construction of at the AWU Malawi Girls School in Malawi and to send
underprivileged local children and youth to camps, and social, leadership and recreational programming
through the Lethbridge YWCA Strong Kids Program.
This wonderful evening is a most memorable celebration! Guests will enjoy a delicious internationally
themed buffet dinner; amazing cultural dancers and entertainment, as well as a dance to follow,
featuring the band “Horizon”. We will also enjoy a Silent Auction with many unique items.
We are asking for your support by becoming a Global Gala Sponsor.
We also invite you attend. Tickets are only $40 each, and will be available online at:
